1 April 2013: Comet C/2011 L4 PANSTARRS

CometsPosted by Koen Miskotte Sun, April 07, 2013 15:55:53

During the evening hours of april 1, 2013 I photographed comet C/2011 L4 PANSTARRS, now for the first time with my Astrotrac Travel Mount. Sky was very good, only at low altitude there was some haze (due to moisture or dust) and dusk.

Picture below is a stack of 4 images of 60 seconds, taken with my Canon EOS 40D, a Canon EF 200 mm F 2.8 (F 3.2) telelens and a IDAS LPF clip-in filter. Also added darks and bias frames. Time: 19:55 UT. The comet was at that time at a height of only 12 degrees above the horizon.

3 oktober 2011: Comet 45P-Honda Mrkos Pajdusakova

CometsPosted by Koen Miskotte Sat, October 08, 2011 13:30:54

After a meteor session in the night of 2/3 oktober 2011 I tried to photograph comet 45P-Honda Mrkos Pajdusakova. However, the comet would remain low in the east, the dawn came up and from the southwest thin cirrus clouds were passing by. Despite this difficulties I could use three shots for stacking. The result is here. Clearly the comet visible with a thin long tail. In addition to this recording is a weak red glow, caused by cirrus.

Comet C/2009 P1 Garradd composition

CometsPosted by Koen Miskotte Sun, October 02, 2011 13:14:49

In the early mornings of 1, 3, 4 and 5 August I photographed Comet C/2009 P1 Garradd from Hakos Guestfarm in Namibia. The comet passed the globular cluster Messier 15 in the constellation of Pegasus. The comet was already showing a little tail. Due to a trip to Sossusvlei on August 1 and 2 the comet was not recorded on August 2. From the images of 1, 3, 4 and 5 August I made a composition. The comet moved from right to left on the picture and the bright star on the right is the star Pegasus 3 or Enif.
The pictures were made on:
August 1, 2011 at 02:22 UT
August 3, 2011 at 04:00 UT
August 4, 2011 at 00:33 UT
August 5, 2011 at 02:54 UT

Data of the camera below the photo.

Comet C2010 X1 (Elenin) captured from Namibia!

CometsPosted by Koen Miskotte Sun, September 18, 2011 14:15:05

On July 31, 2011 around 20:34 UT I tried to capture Comet C2010 X1 (Elenin) with my Astrotrac mount and the Canon EOS 40D with a Canon EF 200mm f/2.8 telephotolens. I thought I had failed because of the bright zodiakal light. Afterwards I learned that I still have captured this small comet. He stands on two shots, one of which failed by a tracking error. That leaves one pictured of 60 seconds, right in the zodiacal light. The comet is at the right undercorner.
